Scope and Contents

Contains research documents collected by H. Julene Butler pertaining to the construction and ongoing history of the Harold B. Lee Library. The materials contain a wide variety of historical documents as well as official documents and minutes pertaining to the library, such as notes, articles, and website printouts, copies of memorandums, committee records, past written histories, manuals and instructions, and other library records. Includes computer media, such as USB drives, DVD and compact discs, and floppy disks. Also contains a later compilation of historical records on library administration by other creators, including library Administrative Council minutes. Materials dated 1961 to 2013.

Biographical / Historical

H. Julene Butler was born in 1948. She received a bachelor’s degree in English, a master's degree in library science from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in Communication, Information, and Library Science from Rutgers University.

Butler joined the Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library faculty in 1971 as a French language cataloger. She served as General Reference Department Chair, Library Use Instruction Coordinator, Assistant University Librarian for Public Services, and Associate University Librarian. Butler served as the University Librarian from 2009-2012.

Butler was a member of several consortia including the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). She has served in leadership positions with ARL's Research Libraries Leadership Fellows, the Utah Academic Library Consortium, and the Utah Library Association.

Biographical / Historical

The Harold B. Lee Library was aligned with Media Services under the Assistant Academic Vice President of Brigham Young University in 1973. In that same year, the J. Reuben Clark, Jr., Library was renamed the Harold B. Lee Library. Internally, the Harold B. Lee Library is managed by the library director, who is aided by an associate university librarian and assistant university librarians, who oversee divisions of the library. Directors have included Donald K. Nelson (1973-1980), Sterling J. Albrecht (1980-2002), Randy J. Olsen (2002-2009), Julene Butler (2010-2012), Scott Duvall (interim, 2012-2013), Jennifer Paustenbaugh (2013-2019), Brian Rennick (interim, 2019-2020), and (Rick Anderson, 2020- ). The library building was expanded in 1976 and 2000 and continues to provide students and faculty access to scholarly materials.

Biographical / Historical

The J. Reuben Clark, Jr. Library (1961-1973) served as the university library at Brigham Young University.

The library was renamed as the Clark Library in 1961, following the construction of a new library building. The library was later renamed as the Harold B. Lee Library in 1973. Library directors included S. Lyman Tyler (1961-1966) and Donald K. Nelson (1966-1973).
