Biographical / Historical
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages had its beginnings in the fall of 1964 when Russian Studies became part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Brigham Young University. The Program now offers training in Russian, German, and many of the Slavic languages of Eastern Europe, including Polish, Bulgarian, Serbian and Ukrainian. The department concentrates on all aspects of communication, with particular attention paid to colloquial speech, effective writing, and listening skills. Students become experienced in Russian culture, literature, and the structure of the Russian language. Recent changes in the political and economic structure of Russia have made the Russian language a valuable tool in many researching fields, international business and law, for studies in politics, economics, sociology and history.
