Administrative History

The office of Provost at Brigham Young University was created during the administration of Jeffrey R. Holland (1980-1989). The first Provost, Jae R. Ballif, also held the position of Academic Vice President. During the administration of Rex E. Lee (1989-1996) the office of Provost and the position of Academic Vice President were separated. The Provost was put in charge of the academic administration of the university and the Academic Vice President began reporting to the Provost. The Provost was the number two position at the Brigham Young University during this period. In 1996 the Merrill J. Bateman (1996-2003) administration eliminated the office of Provost and integrated the responsibilities of this office with other administrative positions.
