Scope and Contents

Contains two oral history volumes pertaining to the interview of Harvard Heath by Hollis Scott on April 22, 1982. He talks about the research to write the Brigham Young University Centennial History with colleagues and how they acquired materials with help from President Wilkinson and other administrators and faculty. He mentions Wilkinson's involvement in the project as it neared his life and how that was helpful and problematic. He also discusses other university presidents and their terminations.

Biographical History

Harvard S. Heath (born 1945) is an historian and manuscripts librarian in Utah.

Harvard Swensen Heath was born March 4, 1945. He studied history as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University, graduating in 1974. Around this period he married Susan Graeber. He then worked as a research and writing assistant to Ernest L. Wilkinson in the preparation of his history of Brigham Young University. In 1984 Heath joined the faculty of the Harold B. Lee Library, working as the curator of Utah and American West Archives. In 1990 he completed his Ph.D. in American History from Brigham Young University. He has also published, presented, and edited volumes on Mormon history topics. Heath retired from the university in 2001.

Biographical History

Hollis Scott (1919-2005) was a journalist and University Archivist at Brigham Young University.

Scott was born on October 10, 1919 in Burley, Idaho, to Leo Vernal Scott and Ivy Eliza Hull. He attended Brigham Young University for one year and then, during World War II, Scott enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Fort Logan, Colorado, for three years where he served as Post Librarian before being transferred to Florida for another year. After his service in the military, he returned to BYU where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Scott met his wife, Cynthia Ruth Atkin, while working in Tooele, Utah at the Tooele Transcript Bulletin. They were married November 18, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. Later, Scott worked at the Orem Geneva Times as advertising manager and editor, after which he was employed at Brigham Young University in the library, later holding the title of University Archivist. He worked as University Archivist from 1963-1985. He was a member of the Orem Boosters Club and served as its president for two years. Scott also served on the Orem Heritage Museum board as historian for many years. He died in Provo, Utah on December 15, 2005.
