Scope and Contents

Interview conducted by Richard Poll as part of the Brigham Young University Archives Joint Oral History Project of the Brigham Young University Alumni Association Emeritus Club on September 26, 1988 and April 10, 1989. Allen describes why he chose to teach history at BYU. He gives an account of his employment with the BYU History Department, discusses different aspects of his career, and describes his contributions to the History Department and the University. Includes sound recording and transcript.

Biographical History

James. B. Allen (b. 1927) is an American historian of Mormonism and was the Assistant Church Historian of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1972-1979. As a professor at Brigham Young University (1964-1992) he taught in the religion and history departments and was chair of the history department from 1981-1987. Upon his retierment he served as a senior research fellow with the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History. He was one of the founders of the Mormon History Association and served as its president in 1972.
