Biographical History
John Canute Swenson was born on February 4, 1869 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Knud (Canute) Svendsen and Johanne Maire Pedersen. He graduated from Brigham Young Academy High School in 1888 and Brigham Young Academy Collegiate Diploma in 1900. Swenson joined the faculty at Brigham Young Academy in 1898 and was chairman of the Sociology Department for thirty years. He was the Dean of the College Division from 1904-1910; the school's first coach; and Dean of the College of Education from 1921-1225. He was associated in the Lyceum program (concert and artist series) with Herald R. Clark for many years. A room in the Smith Family Living Center and a building in the Wymount Terrace residence complex were named in his honor. He died on August 30, 1953 in Provo, Utah.
