Underwood and Underwood stereographs
Scope and Contents
The collection includes 39 stereographs, 37 of which are from an edition of the Latter-Day Saints' Tour from Palmyra New York to Salt Lake City. The other two stereographs are of the interior of the Mormon Tabernacle (1904) and the Eagle Gate (1904) photographed by B.W. Kilburn. A photocopy of the pamphlet "The Latter-Day Saints' Tour: from Palmyra, New York to Salt Lake City, through the stereoscope" by Brigham H. Roberts. A photocopied copy of "Sterographs and Stereotypes: A 1904 View of Mormonism" by Richard Neitzel Holzapfel. A CD with files: anaglyphs, documents, Joseph Johnstun, Stereo Photo Maker Software, Stereo Pairs, README (file). An aluminum stereoviewer.

Permission to publish material from the Underwood and Underwood stereographs held in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University must be obtained in writing from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the Board of Curators.
Administrative history
In 1882 Elmer and Ben Underwood set up an office on Ottawa, Kansas to distribute Eastern photographers' stereographs to the Western market with door-to-door salesmen. By 1891, they had established a plant in Ottawa to manufature stereo photographic cameras, stereo views and stereoscopes; moved their headquarters to New York City, opened branch offices in Baltimore, New York, and Liverpool. By 1901, Underwood and Underwood was manufacturing packaged sets of stereo views--25,000 a day (more than seven million a a year), and 300,000 stereoscopes a year.
