Administrative History

The Arizona Co-operative Mercantile Institution was created to help aid the economic situation of Latter-day Saints in Arizona.

The Arizona Co-operative Mercantile Institution was created to meet the needs of the strained economy among the early settlements of Latter-day Saints in Arizona. The cooperative store was set up in many towns in an effort to benefit the town and the individual. In January 1881, in Snowflake, Arizona, a co-operative store was begun that eventually merged into the Arizona Cooperative Mercantile Institution. This was based in St. Johns, Arizona. They were proprietors of Silver Creek Flour Mills. It was fashioned somewhat after the Z.C.M.I. at LDS Church headquarters.
