Conditions Governing Access

Restricted. Closed for 50 years from the date of creation of the records, and thereafter open to the public in accordance with the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Restriction Policy. Requests to access restricted materials in the University Archives should be submitted to the University Archivist.

It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain any necessary copyright clearances. Permission to publish material from Religious Instruction records must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Board of Curators.

Biographical History

Religious Instruction was established in 1973 as part of a reorganization of the College of Religious Instruction. Its instructors taught courses in ancient scripture and the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was renamed Religious Education in 1983. The College of Religious Instruction was established in 1959 in a reorganization of the Division of Religion. The college provided instruction in ancient scripture and the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and granted master's and doctoral degrees in Mormon religious studies. The college was reorganized, losing its college status, in 1973.
