Scope and Contents

Contains two rare books and six small journals related to Latter Day Saint apostle George Teasdale (1831-1907), his son George Ezra Teasdale (1857-1935), and George Ezra's daughter June Emma Teasdale (1900-1920). Materials include in formation on family and social activities, as well as service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Materials date from between 1841 and 1929.

Biographical History

The Teasdale family were Latter Day Saint pioneers and ecclesiastical leaders in Utah and the larger West. The family was established by George Teasdale (1831-1907), following his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Emily Emma Brown (1831-1874) in 1853, and they had three children. Teasdale served as a leader in the Church, becoming an apostle and member of the the Council of the Twelve in 1882 and serving as president of the European and Mexican missions. He entered into polygamy, marrying at least five other wives including Lilles Hook (1840-1900, one child), Evelina Lovina Babbitt (1858-1947, seven children), Matilda Ellen Picton (1858-1893, two children), Mary Lauretta Picton (1863-1895, two children), and Eunice A. Ivins (1855-1927, four children).

Arranged in three series: 1. Teasdale family rare books, 1841-1851. 2. George Ezra Teasdale journal, 1898-1917. 3. June Emma Teasdale journals and letter, 1916-1919.

Custodial History

Collection was part of Vera Maud Teasdale Nelson's estate, George Ezra Teasdale's daughter. Donald A. Nelson, one of Vera's descendents, gained posession of this collection and donated it to the repository on June 28, 2013.

Appraisal

The Donald A. Nelson collection of Teasdale family books and journals were created by Apostle George Teasdale, his son George Ezra Teasdale, and his granddaughter June Emma Teasdale and span the years 1902-1929, thus qualifying for the 19th Century Western & Mormon Manuscripts collection.
