Handwritten and signed letters by Roger and Clarissa Orton from Kirtland, Ohio. They are addressed to Clarissa's father, Calvin Bicknell. The letters are a family update and an update on the state of affairs in Kirtland, Ohio. Specifically mentioned are the work on the Kirtland Temple and the School of the Prophets organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Materials are dated January-February 1834.

Biographical / Historical

Roger Orton, Jr. was born on January 20, 1799, in Genesco County, New York to Esther Avery and Roger Orton. He was one of eleven children. He married Clarissa Mary Bicknell in 1822, in Geneseo, New York. Together they had six children. Roger was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ordained an elder in 1834. In the same year, he participated in the Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri. By 1835, Orton was appointed to a high council and the First Quorum of the Seventy in Kirtland, Ohio. Orton professed to have seen an angel during the 1836 Kirtland Temple dedication. By 1840, he moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Orton died on November 24, 1851, in Lee County, Iowa.

Clarissa Mary Bicknell was born on January 19, 1804, in Oneida, New York to Chloe Seymour and Calvin Field Bicknell. She was one of eight children. Clarissa married Roger Orton, Jr. in 1822, in Geneseo, New York. Together they had six children. She died in 1852.

Calvin Field Bicknell was born on May 25, 1779, in Mansfield, Connecticut to Moses Huldah Field and Moses Bicknell. He was one of eight children. He married Chloe Seymour in January of 1803. Together they had eight children. Calvin died on June 14, 1866, in Clarksburg, Ohio.
