Johan Söderholm journal

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS 7866

Scope and Contents

Collection contains photocopies of the journal of Johan Söderholm and of the translation of the journal from Swedish to English. The journal covers the period from 1867 to 1895, with the majority of events mentioned occurring between 1867 and 1873. The translation was made in 1981 by his great-grandson Carl R. Sederholm. Johan gives his story and thoughts of converting to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his wife Carolina. The journal describes Church life in southern Sweden, such as district conferences and Church meetings, including testimony meetings and hymn singing. Numerous members anticipated, prepared for, and immigrated to Zion –- the Salt Lake Valley. Other individuals came from Zion to be missionaries in Sweden. Family events such as blessings, baptisms, and ordinations were recorded, as well as Johan Söderholm's interaction with people in and out of the Church. Johan was chosen to be prayer-president, watch over the Saints in his area, and be in charge of all the Church books. Johan's daughter Lena immigrated to Zion on May 21, 1866, and was engaged to Charles Wilbur on December 24, 1868. The collection contains a digital copy of the record as well.
