Biographical / Historical
The Smith family of Utah was led in the late nineteeth-century by Joseph F. Smith (1838-1918). Smith became an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1866, and served as president of the Church from 1901 to 1918. He had six wives: Levira Smith, Julina Lambson, Sarah Ellen Richards, Edna Lambson, Alice Ann Kimball, and Mary Taylor Schwartz. Between them Smith had forty-three children, including Hyrum Mack Smith and Joseph Fielding Smith.

Custodial History
Original photographs were collected by the Smith family, principally by Mary Lou Walker. They were loaned to the Church Archives for copying, which was performed by Jeff Anderson of the Church and Family History Library. A second copy of the images was shared by the Church Archives with the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.
