David H. Yarn was born in 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Georgia Tech before serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Western States Mission. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree, Yarn taught theology classes at BYU before attending Columbia University to obtain his master’s degree. After six years of serving as department chair, Yarn took a sabbatical to earn a PhD from Columbia University. He was then promoted to the position of associate professor and director of the Religion Department at BYU. Yarn was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and general editor of the J. Reuben Clark project.
