Biographical / Historical

David Ross Lyon (August 16, 1864 - June 4, 1940) was the son of the Scottish poet, John Lyon. He worked in the printing business from the time he was a small boy until his death. He served in several church callings, including bishop and stake patriarch.

David Ross Lyon was born on August 16, 1864 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Lyon, the Scottish poet, and Caroline Holland. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called LDS Church), by President Joseph F. Smith, on November 16, 1876. He married Mary Cairns on the September 30, 1885 in the Logan Temple, and they had ten children together. As an occupation, he worked in a printing office. He began at the age of twelve, working as an apprentice at the Salt Lake Herald newspaper. He was then hired to work on Parry's Monthly Magazine with Joseph Hyrum Parry, a printer and entrepreneur, in 1884. He eventually bought the business, as well as several other small printing establishments, and created the Magazine Printing Company. He continued in the printing business until 1937.

David Lyon served in several different callings in the Church, including as a teacher, a member of the superintendency of the Stake Sunday School, a bishop, and finally as a stake patriarch. He was called by Joseph F. Smith to be a bishop twice in just over one year. In August 1912, he was called to be the bishop of the Twentieth Ward in Salt Lake City. Then in August 1913 he was called to be bishop of the Ensign Ward, in which calling he served in until February 1926. At that time he was called to be Patriarch of the Ensign Stake, a calling which he held until his death. David R. Lyon died June 4, 1940 in Temple City, California.
