Scope and Contents

The collection contains family and personal papers of Ferdinand Friis Hintze Sr., and Ferdinand Friis Hintze Jr., including original and photocopies, and typescripts of missionary journals of F.F. Hintze, Sr. and Jr., family correspondence; photocopies and typescripts of various documents; biographies of family members; ledger book (original and photocopies) of Ferdinand Friis Hintze Sr., 1877-1917?, and Family Record Book of F.F. Hintze Sr., 1821-1924 (original and photocopy).
Scope and Contents

The collection contains material on the Hintze family record and history; information on the Turkish mission ca. late 19th century; information on the Germany mission ca. 1900; early Nebraska mission information; and names of persons emigrating November 1877 - May 1878.

Biographical History

Ferdinand Friis Hintze, Sr. (1854-1928) was born to Anders Hintze and Karen Sophie Nicolaisen in Roskilde, Copenhagen, Denmark. He and his family joined the Church in Denmark and two years later, when he was age ten, his family emigrated to Utah. He served several missions to the Northwestern States Mission and then to Scandinavia and Turkey. His most notable achievement was translating the Book of Mormon into the Turkish language along with 29,000 copies of missionary tracts. His son, Ferdinand Friis Hintze, Jr. (1881-1973) was born in Big Cottonwood, Utah and later became a professor of geology at the University of Utah.

Custodial History

All items remained in the Ferdinand Friis Hintze family until donated to the BYU L. Tom Perry Special Collections in several installments on 24 January 2001, 23 May 2001, 20 August 2001, and 30 May 2002.

The BYU Library also owns many of Hintze's Turkish tracts. The Church Historical Archives hold the originals of many of F.F. Hintze, Sr. journals.
