Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter to Caine in St. Louis, Missouri regarding various matters for the Mormon newspaper, including paying a debt to David Nicholson and purchasing paper stock with an enclosed draft (check). The letter is in MacKintosh's hand with editor Orson Hyde's name included. MacKintosh refers to Hyde's absence from the newspaper and Hyde's expected return in the fall; he thanks Caine for his unexplained "cooperation" in Pottawatamie; and urges Caine to raise the difference, if the draft is not sufficient to purchase the paper stock, "from the good folks there," with the intention of reimbursement.

Biographical History

John T. Caine (1829-1911) was a Mormon newspaper publisher, teacher, and politician in Utah.

John T. Caine was born on January 8, 1829 in Patrick, Isle of Man. He immigrated to the United States in 1846, and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York in 1847. In 1848 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, living there for nearly four years before moving west to Utah in 1852.

In Utah, Caine initially worked as a teacher. He entered politics in 1856, serving as secretary of the territorial council, as a delegate to Utah constitutional conventions, as city recorder of Salt Lake City, and as a territorial representative to the United States Congress.In 1870 he helped found the Salt Lake Herald, and worked as its managing editor. Caine died on September 20, 1911 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Biographical note

Daniel MacKintosh (1821-1860) was the assistant editor of the "Frontier Guardian" (Kanesville, Iowa) from 1849 to ca. 1857.
