Administrative History

The Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association (est. 1968) is an academic organization dedicated to the study of Medieval and Renaissance disciplines.

The Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association (RMMRA) was established in 1968 by University of Denver history professor, Allen D. Breck. That same year, RMMRA held their first meeting in the Phipps Conference Center at the University of Denver where they discussed the conference theme "The Bishop in Medieval and Renaissance Society." Subsequent annual meetings were hosted by University of Denver (1969), University of Colorado Boulder (1970), Northern Arizona University (1972), University of Denver (1974), University of New Mexico (1975), University of Arizona (1976), Colorado State University (1977), and the University of Utah (1978). In 1979, RMMRA met again at the University of Northern Arizona where, according to Allen Breck, two major events in the history of the Association occurred: 1. "A [formal] set of bylaws" was adopted, and 2. An "agreement" was made "to found a scholarly serial, The Journal of the Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association." The first volume of The Journal of the Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association was published in 1980.

From 1980 to 1997, when the name of the Association's scholarly journal was changed to Quidditas, RMMRA annual meetings were hosted or otherwise organized by a variety of institutions, including: Brigham Young University (1983), Boise State University (1986), Colorado College (1987), Colorado State University (1988), Northern Arizona University (1989), University of Montana (1990), University of Colorado Boulder (1991), Northern Arizona University (1993), University of Wyoming (1994), Utah State University (1995), Brigham Young University (1996), University of Alberta (1997), Montana State University (1998), Arizona State University (1999), University of Utah (2000), Colorado State University (2001), University of Nevada Las Vegas ( 2002), Colorado College (2003), Fort Lewis College (2004), University of Wyoming (2005), Brigham Young University Idaho (2006), Arizona State University (2007), and the University of Colorado Boulder (2008).

Past presidents of RMMRA include: Paul A Dietrich, Carol Neel, Allen D. Breck, Harry Rosenberg, Thomas R. Eckenrode, Charles Odahl, Francis X. Hartigan, Glenn W. Olsen, Delno C. West, Boyd H. Hill, Jean R. Brink, James Fitzmaurice, Sara Jayne Steen, Charles Smith, Paul Thomas, Jane Woodruff, Isabel Moreira, Darin Merrill, and Kimberly Johnson.

From its founding in 1968 to the present, RMMRA has developed from a small regional group to a large scholarly organization. RMMRA annual meetings now attract scholars and presenters from throughout the United States and many parts of the world. The Association's journal Quidditas is well-regarded and read by many students and scholars of medieval and renaissance studies; in 2004, with the publication of volume 25, the journal transitioned from a paper to an electronic on-line format thereby reaching an even wider audience.
