Scope and Contents

One handwritten record book (150 pages) and one newspaper clipping. The record book documents the genealogy of the McKean family. It also includes a short autobiography of Theodore McKean. He describes his youth, his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his various business affairs. Materials dated 1877 to 1887.

Biographical History

Theodore McKean was born in 1829 in New Jersey. He received a good education and worked in merchandising with his father and uncles. He married Mary P. Gulick. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and sacrificed his business aspirations to travel west with the Saints. He and his family lived in Salt Lake City for a time but had to evacuate to Provo. Theodore died in 1897.
