Scope and Contents

One handwritten record book (150 pages) and one newspaper clipping. The record book documents the genealogy of the McKean family. It also includes a short autobiography of Theodore McKean. He describes his youth, his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his various business affairs. Materials dated 1877 to 1887.

Biographical History

Theodore McKean was born in 1829 in Allkentown, New Jersey. He worked in merchandising with his father and uncles. He married Mary Page Gulick in 1847 and they had four children. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1851 and travelled west with the Saints. The family settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Theodore was a farmer and stock raiser. He also held many civic positions including sheriff and Utah territorial marshal. He married his second wife Elizabeth Ann Emery on May 11, 1875 and they had twelve children. Theodore passed away on July 9, 1897 in Salt Lake City Utah.
