Scope and Contents note

Ralph D. Nance papers consists of the scholarly research and information concerning Nance's educational programs. The collection includes information on the Youth-Ther (Youth-Talk) Foundation, and specifically the Riq-ology Program Nance developed. The Riq-ology Program is an elementary-education program aimed at helping children solve their frustrations and fears through self-talk and positive thinking. Included are Nance's research, correspondence, evaluations, and the artwork created for the Riq-ology Program. The writings and art created by students in response to the program are also included. The collection dates from 1967 to 1977.

Biographical History

Ralph D. Nance (1915-1978) was a educator and educational researcher in Arizona and Utah.

Ralph Daniel Nance was born 18 November 1915 in Rising Star, Texas. He was involved in the Y.M.C.A and Junior Optimist Club in Dallas, Texas, before getting his master's degree from Southern Methodist University in 1946. Before retiring to Provo in 1970, Nance was a fifth grade teacher in Mesa, Arizona, and a counselor for the educationally-handicapped in Texas and Arizona. He was the founder and executive secretary of the Youth-Ther Foundation, and the developer of the Youth-Talk Foundation program Riq-ology. He worked closely with Utah schools and the Brigham Young University Family Research Center on his programs in the 1960s and 1970s, before his death 7 August 1978.
