Scope and Contents

Handwritten financial papers of William and Elias Rector. Two documents, signed by Elias Rector, concern land transactions. A third itemizes the accounts of his estate. Two notes, signed by William Rector, authorize payment of U.S. funds to surveyors. The remaining three documents are letters from persons for whom William Rector acted as agent and describe land transaction activities.

Biographical History

The Rector family were influential pioneers in Illinois and Missouri. The family, led by Frederick and Elizabeth Rector, were originally from Virginia, but moved west in the early 1800s. Their children played important roles in the development of the West. Their son William (1778-1827) served as Surveyor General of Illinois, a representative to the Missouri Constitutional Convention, and director of the Bank of St. Louis. Their son Elias (1780-1822) served as Attorney General of Illinois, postmaster of St. Louis, and a state senator in Missouri.
