Biographical History
Oliver Cowdery (1806-1850) was a Mormon ecclesiastical leader, lawyer, and newspaper editor.
Oliver Cowdery was born October 3, 1806 in Wells, Vermont to William Cowdery and Rebecca Fuller. He took a position as a school teacher in Manchester, New York in 1829, where he met Joseph Smith. Later that year he helped with the translation the Book of Mormon in his role as scribe. He married Elizabeth Ann Whitmer (1815-1892) on December 18, 1832, and they had seven children. Cowdery was later excommunicated from the Church in 1838, and moved to Tiffin, Ohio where he practiced law and edited the local Democratic newspaper. However, in 1848 he returned to the Church and was rebaptized at Kanesville, Iowa on November 12th. Cowdery died on March 3, 1850 in Richmond, Missouri.
