Scope and Contents

Holograph letters dating from July 1884 to June 1886 written to the family of Reuben A. Allen, many of who were living in Freeport, Ohio. At this time Allen was an Indian agent at the Crow-Blackfoot Agency in Piegan, Montana. Most of the letters are written from Reuben and his daughter, Nora, and Lyde, who may be Reuben's wife, Eliza. Most of the letters are written to Reuben's parents, Isaac and Sarah Allen, or his sister Winnie, all of whom lived in Freeport, Ohio.

The items include information regarding life at a frontier fort; relation with the local Indians; receipt of supplies for the Indians; attendance of Indian children at the school taught by Allen's daughter; Indian customs, rituals, and celebrations; and a drawing of the layout of the fort.
