Biographical History

Dudley H. Cooper (1821-1877) was Captain of the Missouri Mounted Volunteers, First Regiment, Mexican War, 1846.

Dudley H. Cooper, son of Benjamin Cooper, was born in 1821 in MIssouri. He was a captain of the Missouri Mounted Volunteers, First Regiment, from Howard County, Missouri who served in the Mexican War. Some of the letters in the collection refer to the camps, marches, condition of the volunteer army, anticipated battles and the prospects of a treaty alliance with the Navaho Indians. There is also reference to the popular military leaders Col. Alexander Doniphan and Maj. William Gilpin. Col. John T. Hughes complimented Captain Cooper for his participation in the Mexican War and for furnishing information on the war (William Elsey Connelley, Doniphan's Expedition: Conquest of New Mexico and California [Topeka, Kansas, 1907] p. 11, 556).

Cooper later resided in Saline County, Missouri. He was an attorney, affluent businessman, real estate agent, and active in the social and political activities of the state.
