S. Kent Brown was a professor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University (Ph.D., Brown University). He taught for over thirty years at Brigham Young University, where he also served as the Director of FARMS and on the executive council of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship. He served as the director of the Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies from 1993 to 1996. He was a fellow of the American Research Center in Egypt, where he worked on ostraca at the Coptic Museum in Old Cairo. He has also been a fellow of the David M. Kennedy Center in Provo. He is also a member of the Board of Editors for the Encyclopedia of Mormonism. His degrees include a B.A. in 1967 from the University of California at Berkeley in Classical Greek, with a minor in Near Eastern languages, and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Brown University in 1972, with an emphasis in New Testament and Early Christian Studies. Brown has written and edited a wide variety of books dealing with Lehi, the Book of Mormon, Judaism between Malachi and the New Testament, the New Testament and Pearl of Great Price. Brown was a consultant in the production of the film The Prince of Egypt. He is married to the former Gayle Oblad; they are the parents of five children and the grandparents of sixteen grandchildren.

Custodial History note

Donated in 2005, the photographs were taken by the donor.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

Donated; S. Kent Brown; 2005.

Appraisal note

This collection belongs in the 20th Century Western and Mormon Americana because the photographs were taken during the 1900s by a professor here at Brigham Young University. They are also important because they contain photographs of sections of the Nicene Creed that were lost during a move of the department.
