Administrative History

The Genealogical Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints formed in a reorganization of the Church's Genealogical Society in 1974. It was first established as the Genealogical Society of Utah in 1894. The Genealogical Department maintained the Genealogical Library, located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Genealogical Department was renamed the Family History Department in 1987, and the Genealogical Library became known as the Family History Library.
