The materials relate to Hillendahl's work as director of business research and document much of the economy of Hawaii. The correspondence refers to Hillendahl's contact with various states regarding taxation legislation. Many of the papers also deal with his participation in community organizations. The papers span from 1962-1981.

Biographical History

Wesley H. Hillendahl (1921-1995) was the vice president and director of business research of the Bank of Hawaii.

Wesley H. Hillendahl received his mechanical engineering degree with distinction in 1942. He received his MBA from the Graduate School of Business Administration in 1949. He worked in many positions for different companies through out his career including vice president and director of business research of the Bank of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii; industrial economist for the Stanford Research Institute; partner of a management consulting firm in Southern California; a market research director of the aerophysics development division of the Curtis Wright Corp. in Santa Barbara, California; a district engineer and various sales positions for the Union Carbide Corp.; and he conducted aeronautical and thermodynamics engineering research (represented NACA while on active duty in US Navy for 3 years) at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (now NASA).

Hillendahl was also a part of clubs such as the Hawaii Economic Association (VP, 69), the American Society of Appraisers, the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the National Planning Association, and many other groups. He was also a part of the community in various clubs and organizations: the Hawaii Visitors Bureau Research Committee (where he served as a chairman), the Interim Committee on Travel Industry, the Oahu Development Conference, the Urban Renewal Committee, the Pacific Club, the Rotary Club of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii Civil Defense Division, and various others.

Custodial History note

The original three boxes were donated by Hillendahl in 1983. Seventeen additional boxes were found in the stacks in 2008 and added to the three boxes.
