Biographical History
Dorald M. Allred (1923-present) was a professor at Brigham Young University. He taught in the Zoology department for 31 years. Later he became the Director of the Bean Museum and served in that position until his retirement.
Dorald M. Allred was born July 11, 1923 in Lehi, Utah. He later married Berna Wilate Brown Allred in the Salt Lake Temple on March 14, 1952. They had five children, sixteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He graduated from Lehi High School, from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, then earned his Masters degree there in Entomology. He received his PhD degree from the University of Utah in 1954. Dorald joined the faculty at BYU in 1956 and taught in the Zoology department for 31 years. While there he received many awards: Professor of the Year (1958), Karl G. Maeser Research Award (1967), Certificate of Merit for the Dictionary of International Biology (1970), and President-elect of Sigma Xi (1973). By age 50 he had published 100 scientific articles and a textbook, "Living Things." He was editor of the BYU Science Bulletin and director of the Center of Environmental Biology. He served as administrative assistant to Dean A. Lester Allen (1974-1977), became Assistant Director of the Bean Museum at BYU in 1976, and its Director in 1982 until his retirement. Dorald M. Allred served his country in World War II as a communications' operator in the Navy, nickname "Flags." He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and resided in the Edgemont Third Ward. He served in many callings including High Counselor in a BYU Stake, Stake Missionary, Seventies President, and Sunday School Superintendent. At his passing he was Stake Director of Libraries. Among the things he loved most are his family, nature, and teaching. Even after his retirement, he volunteered his teaching skills to local schools, sharing with them the wonders of nature. He was known as an early riser, a hard worker, and a great organizer and gardener. He loved fixing and building things for his neighbors and family. He was talented in carpentry, photography, and music. He was a wonderful tenor and performed with his wife, Berna.
