Oral history interview with Wayne A. Warr
Scope and Contents
A typescript and two audiocassette recordings of an interview with Wayne A. Warr conducted by Scott M. Fellows on February 14, 1985, for the Ray Hillam war project. Warr served in the United States Army and was sent to Vietnam in 1965 as a radio operator. He was in Vietnam for three months in 1965 and returned in 1967 as a platoon sergeant. He tells about his daily routines, experiences when ambushed, and difficulty distinguishing the enemy. States the North Vietnamese were well trained, and if they had been well equipped could have easily defeated the United States. He liked the closeness of the organization and how the Americans all depended on each other. On one operation, only 2 of 22 men in his company survived. He was wounded in the same ambush. He was never angry at the enemy. He went to Vietnam again in 1970 and 1971. He says that it was difficult to motivate the men to fight because the soldiers knew that the United States forces were not trying to win the war. He didn't think that the United States' involvement in the war was justified, and the war made him a stranger to his family. Warr is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was very patriotic. He says speaking in Church meetings as a child gave him good leadership skills.
