Scope and Contents
Transcript of a interview conducted by Richard Maynard on 27 July and 1 and 8 Aug. 1973 for the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies LDS Chaplain Oral History Project. Bowers-Irons was born in Nephi, Utah, and served as a missionary to South Africa for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He graduated in psychology from Brigham Young University in 1942. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and was commissioned a chaplain in 1944. He served in Europe and was sent back to the United States in 1946. He also served in Korean during the Korean War. Bowers-Irons told about the evil conduct of many of the men and compared the nature of World War II with that of the Korean War. He stated that war is both horrible and stupid. There is nothing fun in it, and it is deadly and cruel. He said few of the veterans talk about dying because no one wants to hear about that. They just want to know about courage. He discussed his activities with other chaplains. He said he enjoyed working with the soldiers and giving them guidance.
