Scope and Contents

Typed transcript of part of Henry Rice Mann's diary. Transcript begins June 22, 1849 and ends September 18, 1849. On the entry of August 10, 1849, Mann is 35 years old. The diary recounts his trip across the United States to become a gold panner in California. Mann describes the climate, surrounding nature, the wagon train, camping life, and the prospect of searching for gold in California.

Biographical / Historical

Henry Rice Mann was born on August 10, 1814, in Middlebury, Vermont to Patty Rice and Larnard Mann. He married Olive Lucinda Trowbridge in 1839 in Michigan. They had four children. Henry travelled to Sacramento City, California, without his family, to participate in the Gold Rush in 1849. After unsuccessfully panning, Henry became Jackson’s first post master in 1851. He and his business partner, William McKim, opened the Astor House, a boarding house for miners and travelers. Mann died on May 20, 1852, in Jackson, California at the age of 37. He was attacked by a bear that he had chained to a tree and kept as a pet.

Original copy of diary was passed through the family line from Henry Rice Mann to Adeline Mann Turner (daughter) to Olive Eleanor "Ellen" Turner (daughter of Adeline) to Margaret Adeline Toye Cox (daughter of Olive).
