Biographical / Historical
William F. Reese was born in 1938 in South Dakota but grew up in Central Washington state. He began painting seriously at the age of 12, and went on to study at Washington State College and the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. Afterwards, he worked in the American West as a sign-painter. By 1971, he decided to work teaching art lessons in his own private studio in Bellevue, Washington. He created art in many materials, such as oil, watercolor, pastels, sculpture, and lithographs. Reese's philosophy was to use personal observation when creating, thus his "plein air" methods.
Reese earned many awards and medals throughout his career, such as the Best of Show Colonel Smith Award from the National Wildlife Art Museum. He is known for his celebration of the American Northwest and its nature, with his landscapes being some of the most famous. Reese died June 6, 2010.
