Biographical / Historical
Marjorie Pay Hinckley was born on November 23, 1911, to Phillip LeRoy Pay and Georgette Paxman in Nephi, Utah. Her family later moved to Salt Lake City where she attended East High School and graduated in 1929. She worked as secretary in lieu of additional schooling to support her parents and younger siblings. On April 29, 1937, Marjorie Pay Hinckley married Gordon Bitner Hinckley in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married for 67 years and had five children: Kathleen, Richard, Virginia, Clark, and Jane. After serving in various leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon Hinckley was called as Assistant to the Twelve in 1958, and in 1961, as an Apostle. In 1995, he became the fifteenth President of the Church. Marjorie Pay Hinckley frequently traveled worldwide with her husband, ministering and speaking to members of the Church, dignitaries, and political leaders. She authored the book, "Small and Simple Things," was credited posthumously for the book "Letters," and authored the pamphlet, "To Women: Is This What I Was Born To Do?" Marjorie Pay Hinckley died April 6, 2004, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 92.
