John Stewart letter to Christian Stewart
Scope and Contents
A three-page letter from John Stewart while in India to his sister, Christian Stewart, in Scotland. The letter relates to the military engagements of the First Anglo-Sikh War that ended in 1846, as well as peripheral experiences during his time aboard his ship, namely a severe cholera outbreak. Dated 4 August 1846. Collection also contains a transcription of the original letter.

Biographical History
John Stewart (born approximately 1796) lived in India during the First Sikh War, and was originally from Scotland.
John Stewart was born approximately 1796 in Scotland to Alexander and Christian Stewart. He married Isabel Carmichael on February 21, 1801, in Killin, Perthshire, Scotland and together they had 10 children. Stewart served as part of the British East India Company during the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-1846). His daughter, Jane Stewart, was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848.

Donated by Sue Ann Tadje Pugmire in December 2018. Item was found in a box of her grandmother Mary Crookston Gough's family history records. Mary Crookston Gough is John Stewart's great granddaughter through his daughter, Jane Stewart Crookston.
