Administrative History

The United States Forest Service (1905- ) is the agency responsible for managing forests and grasslands across the United States.

The United States Forest Service was established in 1905 as an agency within the Department of Agriculture. The service today is divided into nine administrative regions that each contain several national forests and grasslands. Forests and grasslands are subdivided into ranger districts. The purpose of the service is to protect, conserve, and conduct research on the natural resources of the United States and to provide access and education to visitors. A chief administers the agency at the national level, while regional foresters administer regions, forest supervisors administer forests, and districts are staffed by rangers.
