Contains a subpoena signed by Samuel D. Lucas ordering Joel F. Childs, William Thompson, and Martin O. Jones to appear before a court hearing between Phineas Skinner and Robert A. Crenshaw in Independence, Missouri. Dated July 31, 1854. Also includes an image of Lucas.

Biographical History

Samuel D.avid Lucas (1799-1868) was a Jackson County Missouri court justice and a major general in the Missouri militia.

Samuel David Lucas was born on July 19, 1799 to Hannah Smith and Samuel Lucas in Kentucky, United States. Lucas was a member of the Presbyterian church. He married Theresa Bartlett Allen around November of 1823 and was living in Independence, Missouri by 1827. Lucas and Allen had six children together. In 1831, Lucas became the Jackson County court justice. He was the secretary of a citizens committee that met in Independence in 1833 to discuss the withdrawal of Latter-day Saints from Jackson County. Lucas was also a major general in the Missouri militia and opposed Mormon Forces near Far West, Missouri in October of 1838, taking custody of Joseph Smith, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On October 5, 1850, Lucas's wife died of cholera, and Lucas married Miriam Williamson Symington on July 15, 1851, with whom he had four more children. Lucas died in Independence on February 23, 1868.
