Scope and Contents
Materials include journals, letters, notebooks, photographs, negatives, and audiocassettes of Samuel Frederick "Fred" Curtis and his wife Emmeline Curtis. Topics of materials include Fred's mission in Germany and the mission Samuel and Emmeline later served in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, both for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, their family of six children, and Fred's work at and donations to Brigham Young University. Some photographs depict military camps and activities aboard ships. Materials dated approximately 1930 to 2017.

Biographical / Historical
Emmeline Hastings was born on December 2, 1913, in Mesa, Arizona to her parents Joseph and Amanda C. Kempe Hastings and was the last of five siblings. She attended Brigham Young University and Arizona State University and earned a teaching degree, and became a public school teacher in Arizona. She married Samuel Frederick Curtis in the Mesa Arizona Temple in 1941, and they had six children. In 1989, she accompanied her husband on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission. Emmeline died at home May 19, 2005, in Mesa, Arizona.
Biographical / Historical
Samuel Frederick (Fred) Curtis was born on June 22, 1918, in Stafford, Arizona to Ammon and Mary Jane Curtis. After finishing high school Fred served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany from 1938 until 1940, when he had to flee the country because of the start of World War II. Fred married Emmeline Hastings on May 28, 1941, in the Mesa Arizona Temple, they had six children together. Fred became a farmer and entrepreneur making enough money to donate some of his land and money to Brigham Young University. In 1989, Fred and Emmaline served a mission for the Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana until 1992. Emmeline Curtis passed away on May 19, 2005, in Mesa, Arizona. Fred passed away September 26, 2021.
