Biographical / Historical

Max Florence (July 16, 1865 – November 26, 1932) was an entrepreneur and bootleggerprimarily in the American West.

Florence was born in Lithuania in 1865 and emigrated to the United States in his early 20s. He made his initial fortune in the gold rush of 1890 in Cripple Creek, CO. He was involved in movies, restaurants, bootlegging, and farming in Utah. He owned the Florence Film Exchange. He owned 54 theaters in Utah. He is well-known for obtaining clandestinely taken photographs of the Salt Lake Temple interior and unsuccessfully attempting to blackmail the LDS church with them.
