Biographical History

James Elbert Leavitt (1858-1934) Mormon convert and pioneer in Utah.

James Leavitt was born in Cambria, Michigan on May 12, 1858. After migrating to Utah, he soon married Hulda Jane Parker in Kanosh, Utah on December 25, 1879. Together they had eleven children in all, although four of them passed away early in their childhood. As he lived in Joseph, Utah, he served as the clerk from 1894-1896 to his ward's high priests' group, where he kept a record book which contained both the members of the group and certain activities, such as hunting. After this, he had purchased a plot of land from Isaac and Cora Birdall. However, this land ran into some difficulties, particularly as he had to sue the Birdsall's in 1901 to guarantee the purchase of the property. After his wife died in 1924, he stayed in Joseph until his own death on December 1934.
