Content Description
Materials include a photocopy of a typescript of the diary of Henry Freeman, officer in the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, written during a campaign in the western United States during the American Indian wars. Includes his account of the Battle of Little Big Horn in eastern Montana where Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer was killed and his army was defeated by the the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. Dated March-October 1876.

Biographical History
Henry B. Freeman (1837-1915) was an officer in the United States Army who fought in the Civil War and served in the American West during the Indian Wars of the late nineteenth century.
Henry Blanchard Freeman was born on January 17, 1837 in Vernon, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1855 at the age of 18. He served as a Union Soldier in the Civil War. In 1863, Freeman was brevetted captain for his "gallant and meritorious services in battle." He was captured and escaped from Libby prison twice before he was able to rejoin union forces in 1865. On the 26 April 1866, he married Sarah Darlington (1837-1927) and had one daughter, Julia Freeman.
In 1894, Henry B. Freeman was awarded the medal of honor for his bravery in the Civil War outlining his "distinguished galantry in the battle of Stone River." He served as a officer in the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the US Army during the American Indian Wars, the same regiment where George Armstrong Custer served at the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in eastern Montana. Freeman later served in Cuba and the Philipines before retiring in 1901.
Henry Blanchard Freeman died at Douglas, Wyoming on October 16, 1915 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
