This collection primarily contains the correspondence between J. Cecil Alter and Arthur W. Duncan, from 1948-1957. Included also is a preface written by J. Cecil Alter for Francis F. Victor’s River of the West.

Biographical History
J. Cecil Alter (1879-1964) was a noted Utah historian.
J. Cecil Alter was born on 31 March 1879 in Rensselaer, Indiana. He attended Valparaiso University, Northern Indiana Teachers' Institute, and Purdue University. A noted Utah historian, Alter wrote James Bridger(1925), Through the Heart of the Scenic West (1927), Storied Domain (1932), and Early Utah Journalism (1938). He began working for the Salt Lake Weather Bureau in Salt Lake City in 1927. In 1941 he accepted a similar position in Cincinnati, Ohio and retired there in 1949. He died in May 1964 in Los Angeles, California.
