Biographical History
Stewart Van Vliet (1815-1901) was a United States Army officer who fought during the Civil War.
Stewart Van Vliet was born July 21, 1815, in Ferrisburg, Vermont. He joined the United States Military Academy in 1836 graduating in 1840. He married Sarah Jane Brown on March 6, 1851. In 1857 he participated in the Utah War against the Mormons, where he traveled to Salt Lake City and assisted in settling the dispute without bloodshed. In 1861 he was promoted to Brigadier General, Volunteers, and was Chief Quartermaster of ther Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He retired from the Army in 1881 and spent the rest of his life in Washington, D. C. Stewart Van Vliet died on March 28, 1901, in Washington, D. C.
