Contains the papers of violist Thomas Tatton, including correspondence with renowned musicians, research on composers, and papers on the American Viola Society and the International Viola Society. Also contains various collected viola scores and accompanying notes and letters, and audiocassette recordings of viola congresses in the United States and Canada. Materials dated 1896-2010.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Tatton was born on October 14, 1943. Tatton is a violist, teacher, and adjudicator for solo, chamber and orchestral music. He served as president of the American Viola Society from 1994-1998. He was formerly a director of Whittier College and recieved a D.M.A. from University of Illinois. Tatton wrote a monograph for first year teaching entitled "Connecting the Dots" in 2003 and in 2005. He was named Orchestra Educator of the Year by the California Music Educators Association, and was named Outstanding Educator of the Year in 2011 by CMEA Bay Section. From 2006 to 2009, Tatton served as vice president of the International Viola Society. In 2021, Tatton recieved the Dwight Pounds award from the American Viola Society for Lifetime Distinguished Service Contributions. As of 2025, Tatton was a resident of Santa Barbara, California.
