Biographical History

R. Dwaine Goodwin is a folk dancer and folk dance instructor.

Richard Dwaine Goodwin grew up in the small mining town of Pioche, Nevada. His first encounter with the world of dance was participating in the musical production of "Sand in Their Shoes" at Brigham Young University in 1959. Mary Bee Jensen then approached Goodwin about joining the BYU International Folk Dancers. During his undergraduate work he not only performed with the International Folk Dancers but was a member of the Ballroom Dance Team and performed in numerous musical theatre productions.

In 1964 Goodwin graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Recreation, and he and his future wife, Julie Ann Corbett, became members of the first BYU European Folk Festival Tour. Goodwin returned to BYU in the Fall of 1964 as a Recreation graduate assistant and completed his master's degree in Recreation Education in 1966.

Goodwin began his full-time teaching career as an instructor in the Recreation Department of BYU, teaching folk dance and working with Mary Bee Jensen as a co-director of the International Folk Dancers.

After returning from a year's service in Vietnam, Goodwin joined the faculty at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois in 1969. While at ISU Goodwin taught folk dance and developed a performing folk dance group that toured throughout the mid-west and Europe. He also created the Commercial Recreation Degree Program at ISU, and completed his own Ph.D. in Educational Administration in 1987. Goodwin continued to teach at ISU until his retirement in 2000.
