Biographical History

Franz Zeyringer (1920-2009) was a viola soloist, teacher, and author of books and many articles on the viola. He was founder and president of the Internationale Viola Gesellschaft.

From 1968 to 1988, he was the president of the Internationale Viola Gesellschaft. He was then elected honorary president.

Franz Zeyringer wrote Literatur für Viola, and his latest edition stands as one of the most comprehensive records of published music for the viola containing over 14,000 entries of compositions for the viola.

Another large work by Zeyringer dealing with the viola is Die Viola da braccio. This book contains subjects relating to the viola, from the derivation of the word viola, the question of its size, the history of viola performance, to the International Viola archive at Brigham Young University. He was one of the founders of this archive and one of its primary donors.
