Biographical History

David W. Seegmiller (1916-2003) was a Utah native, musician, and Mormon missionary.

David W. Seegmiller was born, in his parent's home, on September 23, 1916 to Frank K. Seegmiller and Ruth H. Baker Seegmiller, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from the University of Utah, with honors, in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. For the next few years he worked as a fifth grade teacher for Granite School District until he was drafted into the army in October of 1942, during World War II. During his service in the army David received specialized training in Chinese Language and Area Studies from the University of Washington. Following his completion of this training he worked as a teletype operator and a telephone switchboard operator along with other jobs while he traveled to India and China during the end of the war. He served in the military until February 1946 when he received his honorable discharge.

Following his military service he moved to New York City in November 1946 to pursue his music career. In 1947, while living in New York, he met his wife Lilia Smith. After three years of friendship they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on October 31, 1950. Their only child, Jesse Frank Seegmiller was born on September 30, 1951. David received his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in February 1957 in Music and Music Education. He then received his Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University in June 1966. While he was obtaining these degrees he was employed by Columbia University working in various positions as a senior clerk in the Registrar's Office; as Coordinator of Student Organizations; and as Executive Assistant in the Office of Placement; in addition to several others.

Following Jesse's graduation from high school in 1968, David and Lilia decided to move. David received a job offer from Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona and was hired to work as a counselor in the Guidance Center in March 1969. He eventually worked his way up to Director of Placement, then Director of Financial Aid, to Dean of Continuing Education. He retired July 1, 1982. Throughout his life he performed in many musical concerts as a soloist or part of a choir. He also taught voice lessons into his later years.

In October 1989, David and Lilia were called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to New York City to work as missionaries in the family history center. They served in that mission until November 1990. David lived happily with his wife in Thatcher, Arizona until November 3, 2003 when he passed away.
