Scope and Contents

This collection contains six glass plate negatives, three 5x7 in. and three 6.5x8.5 in., and six prints produced from the negatives. The images are of Mokelumne Hill, which used to be one of the richest gold mining towns in California.

Biographical / Historical

Edith Irvine was born in 1884 in the small mining community of Sheep Ranch, California, the second child of Thomas Hanna Irvine, a successful gold miner, and Mary Irene Hills. Her photographic efforts were largely unknown, except to family and friends, during her lifetime.She was an amateur photographer of considerable skill, but a school teacher by profession. She died in 1949.
