Scope and Contents

Postcard reproductions of photographs from the Princeton Collections of Western Americana related to an exhibition by the Princeton University Library, October 13, 1985 to January 5, 1986. The images consist primarily of studio portraits of Native American individuals, 1852-1985.

Identified individual studio portraits include Charles Keokuk, a Sac and Fox; Little Crow, a Mdewakanton; Magashapa, a Blackfeet Dakota; Man Who Packs the Eagle, a Cut Head Dakota; Rushing War Eagle, a Mandan; Standing Elk, a Yankton Dakota; Sword, an Oglala Dakota; Wahcoma, a Sac and Fox; and White Horse, a Pawnee. An unidentified studio portrait consists of the torso of a contemporary man identified as "Genizaro", a Spanish term for a detribalized Native American.

A portrait of an Apache man and woman couple is identified as Cassadora and his wife. Exterior portraits include an individual identified as Medicine Bottle, a Dakota, and a group portrait of Pawnee chiefs.

A non-portrait image shows a sculptural detail depicting Leonard Peltier from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, New York.

Identified photographers include Charles M. Bell, Alexander Gardner, William Henry Jackson, James E. McClees Studio, Everett Scott, A. Zeno Shindler, Joel E. Whitney, and Hope Wurmfeld.
