Biographical / Historical
John Y. Bearnson (1899-1985) was born on February 22, 1899, in Winter Quarters, Utah, near present-day Scofield, Utah, to Josephine Marie Christine Jensen and Finnbogi Bearnson. The Bearnson family, with their seven children, settled in Spanish Fork, Utah after several moves. John served in the United States military during both World War I and World War II. He organized the 115th Combat Engineers in Springville, Utah. He also served in several organizations in leadership roles including Captain in the Federalized National Guard, president of the Kiwanis Club, Lieutenant Governor and Commander of the American Legion. John married Birdella Reynolds on October 7, 1925, in Utah. They were settled in Springville, Utah. John ran and operated a men's clothing store, Jack's Toggery, in addition to his work with the Icelandic Association which he served as president. John was given the Order of the Falcon by the president of Iceland for his efforts in fostering good will relationships between the United States and Iceland. John and Birdella served a mission to Iceland for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1977. In 1983, John was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Springville Days celebration. John died on November 15, 1985, in Springville, Utah.
