Scope and Contents note
Series contains a diary written by Bird, documenting his overland journey to California from April 10, 1854 to July 4, 1854. Diary includes a one paragraph introduction to his sister, Julia Bird Talbot, dated August 5, 185[5]. The text documents Bird's travels from Naperville, Illinois, to Bear River, Wyoming. Although Bird completed the overland journey to California, the diary ends July 4, 1855 with his description of the Bear River region. Included in the Bird diary are descriptions of the weather, trailside graves, Native Americans, life on the trail, military forts, trading posts, and natural features, including Independence Rock.
